​If someone were to ask you why safety is important, how would you respond? You may "know" that it's important to keep safety in mind as we go about your daily activities, but how would you explain the reasons why this is the case? Here are some things to think about.

Home Safety Checklist

• Make sure that halls and stairways are always well lit and free from a mess to avoid accidents like slips and trips.
• Use a stable step-stool when changing light bulbs to prevent the risk of falling.
• Have a regular test on your smoke alarms and make sure that all the family members know the drill in case of fire.
• Keep hot drinks and hot plates away from children to prevent burns and scalds.
• Have the equipment’s that uses gas, oil, or solid fuel be checked every year to reduce the risk of fire.
• Do not use appliances with cracked plugs or worn cables to prevent electrocution
• Keep clothing, curtains, and furniture away from all heat sources
• Place furniture away from windows and install some restrictor catches on upstairs windows
• Clean spills on the floor all the time to avoid slips, trips, and falls
• Store medicine out of children’s sight and reach
• Do not leave your children unattended. When bathing, carefully test the temperature of the water to avoid scalding
• Never touch electrical wires with wet hands

• Use a residual current device all the time (RCD) when operating electrically powered garden tools.
• Secure the chemicals out of children’s sight and reach
• Supervise children near the water to avoid drowning
• Always use a protective gear when doing some DIY tasks to avoid accidents
• Always examine the ladders condition before using it to avoid injury from falls
• After working in the garden, keep the garden tools out of children’s sight and reach. Keep the children away when using the lawnmowers.
• Follow the manufacturer’s instruction regarding the safety storing of the poisonous chemicals
•  Make sure that all paths and steps in the garden are level, stable and free from moss. Also, provide safety rails and barriers.
• Keep bonfires and barbecues away from sheds, trees, and fences to avoid uncontrollable fires.
•  Supervise kids all the time
