We do it every day, well at least we hope everyone does. I am talking about maintaining one's hygiene. We wash our hands, bathe, brush our teeth, cut our hair, shave, and clip our nails. These are the basics. We do it to look good and be presentable to other people. However, have you ever realised that there is more to it than looks? What are the health benefits of practising good overall hygiene? Bathing Regularly
A good bath does take away that nasty smell, but what else does it do? Cleaning yourself does remove the dirt and grime. However, it does a lot more. Bacteria and viruses are also washed away that may lead to many diseases. The same goes for allergens that can cause many allergic reactions from a runny nose to skin irritations. Lastly, your skin sheds a lot of dead skin. Since your skin continually sheds, you will need to wash and remove this to avoid caking and also causing more complications. Oral Care You want to brush your teeth after every meal. It can be cumbersome for most of us since we are out during the day working. At the very least we want to floss every day and brush twice a day. Imagine food particles staying in your mouth and rotting. Not only will this stink up your mouth, but can cause irritations and complications. Proper oral care limits the growth of bacteria that can cause many illnesses including gum disease. Care for Your Hands and Feet The right nail care is not only for aesthetics, but it also helps prevent hangnails, infected nail beds, and ingrown nails. All of these conditions can be very uncomfortable and even painful. Wash and clean your hands and feet regularly. Help keep illnesses at bay and stop the spreading of germs by washing your hands. Prevent athlete's foot by keeping your feet clean and dry. Beyond the Physical Mental health also gets a boost when your hygiene is excellent. Your self-confidence and self-esteem are given some help knowing you are feeling and looking your best. Poor hygiene is a sign of mental health issues like depression. Conclusion It may seem like a minor note, but hygiene does go a long way. It is in these little things that your overall health can be protected and secured with health insurance. Thanks for pointing out that the right nail care prevents infected nail beds so we should wash and clean our hands and feet regularly. As you said washing our hands can help keep illnesses at bay and stop the spreading of germs. I guess I should look for anti-germ liners on Monday that I can use to protect myself at the grocery store. I am hoping to avoid getting exposed to bacteria and spreading it to vulnerable people, like my two kids.
